If the first part of the franchise was made by Crytek and in all its features the first game in the series resembles Crysis, then the responsibility for the development of Far Cry 2 lies entirely with Ubisoft Montreal. The most severe of which is the damage inflicted on the players’ psyche, in particular by incredible boredom, which is intensified by the general gray and dusty environment, and aggravated by outbreaks of irritation at the sight of numerous game design solutions, carefully laid out by the developers on almost every square meter of the game world. An example is the beginning of the game, in which you spend 5 minutes driving with a local driver along a country African road, and during this time all you can do is turn your head, looking at the brownish landscape and listening to the mournful speeches of your cab driver. I don’t know what this trip was a reference to, maybe to the trailer from the first Half-Life or to riding a Zhiguli as a hostage in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but there were many times more events taking place on these trips. Another distinctive feature of Far Cry 2 were checkpoints, which had endless enemy respawns. So, if you wanted to clear an oncoming checkpoint on the way to the next mission, then returning from the mission you would have to repeat the above action, because in some way known only to the developers, an incredibly fast replenishment of retired enemies took place, so for those daredevils who continued to play Far Cry 2, pressing the gas pedal and sweeping through all the outposts like a dusty whirlwind under a friendly cannonade of shots was the only possible solution.

As you can see, Far Cry 2 had a lot of shortcomings, so how the developers managed to fix everything for the third part is still a mystery to me. Now, in fact, let’s move on to a detailed consideration of the advantages and disadvantages of Far Cry 3.

Throughout the game we will observe the development of the main character from a carefree young guy to a cold-blooded killer at the end. The classic technique of changing a character under the influence of circumstances is played out here even visually. As we progress through the game, we earn experience points, which we can further spend on acquiring skills, each of which is represented in the form of an icon; in fact, after choosing a certain skill, these icons are applied to the hands of the main character. A similar ritual is associated with the local Rakyat people, who consider us the chosen warrior who can rid the population from the tyranny of pirates. And the number of tattoos on the hands here indicates a person’s readiness to follow the “path of war”.

In addition to the interesting plot, the game has many tasks. Let’s talk about them now. Tasks, strictly speaking, can be divided into two types: the first is the tasks of the main campaign. Here everything is obvious, we approach the mark marked on the map, where the cut-scene starts, and after it, in fact, we proceed to the task itself. There are quite a large number of story quests here and they are all varied: burning a hemp field using dubstep, working for the CIA, hunting pirates and much more. With additional tasks, everything is a little more complicated. There are plenty of different activities in the game, but I’ll try to tell you about the main ones. Let’s start with the towers. This is the hallmark of all Ubisoft games, but it was in Far Cry 3 that the implementation of this gameplay element turned out to be the most successful. Here, each tower is a puzzle, after solving which you can climb to the top and turn off the transmitter, after which the map will show: the location of outposts, habitats of wild animals, and some weapons will become free in the store. After descending from the tower, you can go to capture the outpost. Here the game gives us some variety of passage: we can either take a machine gun and go to the breach, or climb a nearby hill with a sniper rifle, shoot at the cage with a predator and peacefully watch from afar the madness that is happening. Successfully capturing the outpost provides us with a fast travel point and several missions to kill pirate commanders or hunt wild animals. Far Cry 3 boasts not only a large variety of additional tasks, but also their successful introduction into the game’s ecosystem. So if you want, for example, to increase the amount of ammunition carried by the main character, you will have to make a more capacious bandoleer. And to make it you need the skins of certain animals, the habitats of which can be easily found by capturing the tower, and so that the annoying pirates do not scare away the animals with their shots, you will have to clear the nearby checkpoint. No one, of course, will force you to complete additional tasks and you, like a butterfly, can calmly flutter from one story quest to another, but believe me, you won’t get all the pleasure from the game.

Let’s now move on to the shortcomings, and oddly enough the game has them. The most important of them is the last third of the game, taking place on the second island. It is ruled by the chief of Vaasa and the leader of the mercenaries, Hoyt Volker. And to be honest, this villain is head and shoulders below Vaas in terms of charisma and charm, and all the tasks performed on the second island are either a copy of those already completed, or simply a hacky and careless work of the developers, whose only goal, apparently, was to increase the length of the game.

Let’s summarize and start with the ratings – I give Far Cry 3 8 points out of 10.
